My List of Personal Care Items...

I am going to SLOWLY make changes to the products we use everyday. I am allr eady to start Ladybug off completely natural/organic, but the rest of us are going to change gradually so we can find the most cost effective way to do this. For now here is my list (which will probably be added to as I think of things).

  • Body Lotion
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Deodorant
  • Toothpaste
  • Shaving Cream
  • Face Products (cleaner, toner, lotion)
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug Spray/Repellent

Current Status on these...

Body Lotion
We currently use Aveeno, but are about to run out. I got a sample of Burt's Bees and don't like it. My favorite item is Renew from Meleleuca but I let my membership go there, I can buy it on Ebay though. I plan to look into the cost of Aveeno vs. Renew and make a decision. Body lotion is a big deal for us since all of my guys have really dry skin.

Shampoo/Conditioner
We currently use whatever we have gotten for free from CVS (mostly highly *toxic* according to Skin Deep). Pac Man either uses this or Suave Kids. Krash still uses Huggies Natural Hair and Body wash. Krash will begin to share the new Baby Organic Hair/Body wash with Ladybug, but I know that won't work for long on him and certainly not for Pac Man. I want to give the Whole Foods 365 line a try as I have read good things about it, and the whole family can use it. The price is reasonable too.

Deodorant
I use Dove, Suave, or Secret, Daddy uses Sure. I am not overly concerned about changing these yet, as it's not the kids using them. This change will be further down my list.

Toothpaste
Daddy and I will continue to use our ENORMOUS stockpile of TP from CVS, but I did change the boys to Kiss My Face Kids Toothpaste. We haven't tried it yet. This switch was mainly for Krash because of the artificial dyes in most normal kids' toothpastes.

Shaving Cream
Another not-so-concerned category, since it does not involve the kids. I have switched to Aveeno, and plan to stay with that, unless I can find something better and cheaper. Daddy uses whatever we have for free from CVS, normal guy stuff. Later I will look into this.

Face Products
This is a me thing and I have been concerned about this for awhile, I used Garnier for a long time since I had it stocked up for free. I then looked it up on Skin Deep and grew concerned! I just ordered cleaner and toner from Kiss My Face Organics, but haven't used them yet. I am trying to find a face lotion I like. Currently I am using up a sample of Burt's Bees Radiance, but I don't really care for it. Face Lotion is expensive so I am taking my time to decide.

Sunscreen
We have a stock of this (free from CVS), which Daddy and I will use up, but I do plan to get the kiddos safer stuff for this summer. It is high on my current research list, as summer approaches.

Bug Stuff
Also high on my list for obvious reasons. I have never felt good about any type of bug stuff applied to them. I am hoping to find something safe that really works for them, as the bugs can be bad in our backyard.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE California Baby products on my son. The calendula cream is our lifesaver!! He has had serious chapped cheeks lately as he is teething, and the calendula cream has been the best thing in the world for them! I also love their everyday lotion, body/hair wash, and diaper cream. And I'm planning on using their sunscreen this summer. I also like that I can get all of this at our local Target. We don't have a Whole Foods or any other major health-conscious stores in our area, unfortunately, so I'm limited on my choices. But I'd still use California Baby stuff on him...I love it all that much:)

I had every intention of raving about California Baby, but I see that someone already did that. We use their shampoo, lotion, calendula, and sunblock and we are very very very happy with it. And, like lauren said, you can buy it at Target. My kids have dry skin too and a lot of the natural/organic products (especially Burts Bees) made their skin even drier. California Baby works well for them. I highly recommend it. I use Origins facial cleanser, moisturizer, and body lotion for myself.

I'm so glad you started this blog! We are switching over to safe(r) products as well...I'm interested to hear what you end up thinking about everything. We gave up our Melaleuca membership a few months ago and are starting to run low on some of the stock piled items!

Thanks for your input!

For bug repellant i highly reccomend Gentle Naturals brand. I *think* its all safe but you can check skin deep to be sure. Its not as high on our list as things like deoderant but i love this brand.

Mallory has eczema and on a message board a mom reccomended using straight shea butter as lotion. She said you can buy it by the lbs at whole foods

Carisa, like the other mom's suggested, check out California Baby, especially for the sunscreen. They rank 1-2 on skin deep for their products. I love them!! Also, I use the 365 shampoo, body lotion, and conditioner. I think the body lotion would work well for the boys as well. They even have a fragrance free option if the boys have very sensitive skin. We don't really use bug stuff, don't need it here, but I think there are natural products with lemon base available. For facial products, I use an Annemarie Boerlind line from Whole Foods. It's expensive though. Let me know if you find a cheaper line you like :)

I am new to your sites and have grown to love them. Anyway, purchased from QVC "Bug Bands." They are all natural and the kids don't even have to wear them on their arms. I looped my to my stroller. The option are endless. QVC doesn't sell them anymore but I did find these: http://www.goneinsectband.com/

We have gone chemical free and are using all natural (really natural, not just marked that way - hehe) items. We have horrible bugs here in Texas. Oy they are bad. So we bought one of those bug zappers for our backyard. BUT, we looked for one that had the special little block underneath that also attracts mosquitoes. We are bug free now. We have been for 3 years. It's the best investment we made. We got it at Lowes, but I am sure any home improvement store would have one. We got one bigger than needed for our yard (a step up in size), just to make sure we were really covered since there's no wall up that keeps bugs from the neighbor's yard coming into ours. Hehe.

We too use the safest products we can for our family. I've always been weary of chemicals, but now raising a daughter with cancer and having had thyroid issues/graves disease/and subsequent removal, we go as natural as possible. As far as sunscreen it is best to stick to the basics- zinc oxide. All the oxy... chemicals you see in the other products are dangerous and have been proven endocrine disrupters, yet they remain on the market- yikes! We use Baby Lizard, Blue Lizard and Neutrogena Pure and Free (they have a great face stick, too). As far as Melaleuca, we are huge fans of their cleaning products. It was getting expensive, so we now share a membership with friends and place our orders together- much more economical.

I'm another lover of all things California Baby, but I do not recommend their bug lotion. As far as I could tell, it did nothing to keep the bugs off our little guy last summer. I'm researching what bug spray to purchase for this summer...but the California Baby sunscreen is great!

For adults, Alba sunscreens work well...and smell great, too!
