Sunscreen

Where I did my research...

From Skin Deep: Recommended Products from Popular Brands
From SafeMama: 2009 Safer Sunscreen Guide
From NatureMoms Blog: Safe Suncreen for the Family
From Healthy Child: Are Sunscreens Safe?
From Anti-Aging: Just When You Thought Sunscreen was Safe...

Basic Summary:

All suncreens should be free of:
  • parabens
  • phthalates
  • PEG’s
  • propylene glycol
  • SLS
  • dioxanes
  • synthetic fragrances
  • oxybenzone
  • NO sprays (which makes me REALLY sad), as sunscreen shouldn't be inhaled by kiddos at all
What I DO want:
  • Zinc Oxide
  • Titanium Dioxide

What I am considering right now:

What we used last summer (and many before that), I still have leftovers of each of these:

Update: We also used Aveeno Baby last summer, and it is thought to be safe by the general public (me included until now) I was proven VERY wrong, here is info about Aveeno Baby, it is actually one of the worst, ranking at a 7 on Skin Deep...OUCH!!

I know I am a little late on some of my suggestions...but I thought I would mention them anyways. Kiss my Face has a moisture shave that I love...it is good for guys to use as well! Also another company that has everything from cleaning products, to vitamins (and they also have a wonderful natural tear free baby wash/shampoo) --Shaklee!! I use a bunch of their products and highly recommend them! Thanks for posting all your research ! Have a wonderful day!

We just ran out of Janson sunscreen and I think I will try the california baby sunscreen now. I like all their other products, and like you said, they rate really well. I was actually going to pick some up at Target last week, but they didn't carry the sunscreen. I may have to order some online or check out Whole Foods.

I buy the California Baby sunscreen at Whole Foods. We like it. I've never heard of Badger and may try that next when I run out of CB. If you decide on that one, please let us know how you like it.

BTW love this new bog. It's great that I can find all this info in one place and thank you SO much for all this research you do that we can use:)

I'm going to try Azur which I heard about on Coolmompicks.com that claims waterproof at only $2.5/oz which is a great price.

remember you will go through one of those tubes every few days! you must apply at least 1 ounce size amount to each person and apply it every 2 hours. so buy lots

Use cotton (tight woven) light/bright colored long sleeves and pants and a hat and sunglasses if you will be outside. Don't go out between 10 am and 4 pm and apply sunscreen 30 mins before going outside

sorry if this got long you don't have to post the comment i'm just very passionate about skin cancer and sunscreen after my almost losing my dad he lost his ear and only uses Skin Cancer Foundation Approved Products now instead of the natural stuff he used before:

here is a link: http://www.skincancer.org/seal-of-recommendation/

You might also like the Aubrey Organics line. They have everything from sunscreen to shampoo. Wonderful and natural! I'm going to check out the ones that you mentioned!

We use California Baby. I haven't tried Badger sunscreen but they have a really great hand salve that I use on my cracked, bleeding hands in the winter and it works really well. Maybe I'll try their sunscreen if you like it.

Based on the ratings from cosmeticdatabase.com: Banana Boat, Coppertone and all those other popular sunscreens are pretty darn toxic - high hazard zone ratings of 7+ on a scale of zero to ten.

BANANA BOAT
http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/product.php?prod_id=175053
http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/product.php?prod_id=93182
COPPERTONE
http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/product.php?prod_id=93209
http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/product.php?prod_id=17094

Most "natural" things like at Whole Foods such as Burt's Bees, etc. have ratings in the moderate to high hazard zone.

California Baby has safe zone ratings from 0-1 (SPF 30, not the SPF 15).

CALIFORNIA BABY
http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/product.php?prod_id=91467

But get this! The sunscreens at Walgreens and CVS have safe ratings as well of ZERO and TWO and they are probably cheaper than any "natural" thing out there!

Just make sure you get the right kind, if you get it:
WALGREENS
http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/product.php?prod_id=175167&refurl=%2Fbrowse.php%3Fcomp_id%3D1486%26

CVS
http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/product.php?prod_id=101610&refurl=%2Fbrowse.php%3Fcomp_id%3D374%26

Now I'm kicking myself for spending $20 on CA Baby when I could have spent probably $5 at Walgreens.
