Feeding the Lil' Bug

So, it's almost that time. I can't believe it. Almost time to offer Ladybug her very first food...ahhh--how did she get this old?

She is exclusively breastfed and eats well. My boys were both BF also, and each had their first food around 5 1/2-6 months of age. I used the wonderful book, Super Baby Food with both of them and plan to with Ladybug also.

I am more confident when it comes to nutrition nowadays so feeding Bug will be easier for me. My plan is to start with ripe organic Avocado, mashed up and mixed with breastmilk until it's really runny.

We will eat only a little bit of this for about 4-7 days and then I will gradually add other healthy items to her diet. With Pac Man (my 7 yr old) I made all of his food, even his cereal-grinding the grains myself!!! I wasn't so dedicated with Krash (age 3), and plan to do it somewhere in the middle with Ladybug. She will eat entirely organic, everything. I plan to make most of her food myself, with the exception of some organic jars of things I don't usually have on hand, but that will come later.

I am not ready at ALL for her to be old enough to eat food, we still may wait a few weeks. But, I do know that my boys are good eaters, and I do believe in giving first foods between 5 1/2-6 1/2 months. Ladybug will be 6 months old on 10/14. I don't believe any eating plan is 100% right or wrong, that's just what I personally feel comfortable with for various reasons.

I hope to post about her feeding adventures, and resources I find to use on our journey! Anyone else who has posts on your blog about feeding your baby, please leave a link in the comments, I'd love to see!

I made all my own baby food for my son, except the cereal (we get free with WIC). I really enjoyed it and plan to do it again - my little girl is due in December! :)

I made all my baby food for my oldest (except for the cereal). He loved everything! I was impressed with how much better it looked than jar baby food...the peas were such a prettier green!

With Aaron I was not as committed and did use jar baby food...still made some but not everything

With Alyssa I want to make the baby food again...in fact we are going grocery shopping this evening and I will be getting her first veggies. We have already tried cereal with her and she doesn't like it AT ALL!

She is so different than the boys...they almost seemed eager to eat solids and took to eating really quick and really showed delight in it! I think Alyssa would be content with breastmilk for the rest of her life the way she is acting now :-)

I am hoping she will like her veggies...I am sure I will have pics and a statement about it in my What I Love About You post next week...

Speaking of What I Love About You...I need to go make my post for this week!

I wasn't even aware of the fact that I could make my own baby food for my first child. With my second one, who will be 6 months on 10/8, I have started making everything for him.

That book is the best book! It tells you just about everything you need to know about feeding your little one and how to make it yourself. I would highly recommend it to anyone, especially the ones like me who knew nothing!

Just curious to know if you think any equipment/tools are necessary for making baby food? Any recommendations?

I made all organic baby food for Smiley as well. I usually cooked a big batch of something and then froze it in ice cube trays. This makes it so convenient and easy to mix different foods once baby is accustomed to them individually. I also followed the book you used and loved it. Can't wait to get started again with our baby girl :)

I made most of my older son's babyfood, using Super Baby Food as a guide, and hope to do an even better job with my younger one (although he's a long way off at not quite 2 weeks old!). Here are a few posts I did about it.

We did avocado and peaches first, then added in whole grain cereals. My son absolutely HATED finger foods for the longest time, so I'm thinking of waiting until my little one develops a pincer grasp before starting him... even if that's past the recommended 6 months.

Have you thought about doing baby-led solids (some people call it baby-led weaning)?
